For many people, children (and children-at-heart) in particular, Anaheim conjures images of Disneyland. For an alternative crowd – that is, for the beer drinking crowd, it solicits a similar reaction, for obvious reasons: Anaheim is full of beer winners. Even beyond Anaheim, Orange County as a whole has grown into a veritable beer powerhouse, and we have the bling to back it up.
At this years Great American Beer Festival (or ‘GABF’ for the familiar), the ever-experimental Bottle Logic defended last year’s title with another EPIC win for Lagerithm – A beer brewed to specification to satisfy expectations. A second gold was garnered for the robust coffee laced cobaltic porter. Bottle Logic’s hard working brew team have expertly crafted impressive beers like the elusive Fundamental Observation, Dark Star November and Passionate Dragon – At next year’s GABF one of these notable will shine.
TAPS Fish House & Brewery won an impressive troop of medals between their locations. Back up in Brea, Kyle Manns has further solidified his position as a beer pioneer (beeroneer?) by taking double-gold – one for their Velvet Hog, and one for their TAPS Irish Red. The brew crew also rightfully won silver for TAPS Kellerbier, bronze for Amend This! and to top it all off conquered an award for mid-size brewpub/brewer (Jonathan Chiusano) of the year for TAPS in Corona. Earlier this year after the return of two powerhouse brewers (Huls and Manns) changes were made: a new in-house laboratory, expansion of beers and new brewers. Forging new ground these changes have indubitably lead to this immense GABF bling.
First time GABF recipients and crowd favorite brewery, Noble Aleworks scored a bronze for its Nose Candy Session IPA. This award winning beer pours golden and is the ultimate treat for the senses, with bright hoppy aromas and flavors reminiscent of jelly citrus candy.
San Diego will always have its place as the southern California mothership of beer. And Portland will always be a classic beer-vana. But beer is only becoming more popular, and the sleeping giant which is Orange County is quickly developing into a destination for beer
To Bottle Logic; to TAPS; to Noble Aleworks; to all the Orange County breweries: keep doing exactly what you’re doing. It’s working. And we’ve got the bling to prove it! !
