Festival season has begun and the avid beer lover has a countless number of these festivals to choose from. Among the many festivals, however, one stands alone in its unique experience – Firkfest is a one-of-a-kind festival that offers specialty casks from the Southland’s favorite local breweries. This being my third consecutive year in attendance, it’s always a treat seeing friendly faces, brewers, and the beer community all gather together in the name of great cask ales.
El Segundo (South LA)
Broken Skull IPA w/Sweet Basil – ABV 6.7%
Brewed in homage to Stone Cold Steve Austin, this beer packs a bold hop punch, having been brewed with Citra, Chinook and Cascade varieties. Flavors of resinous hoppiness are heightened by gentle flavors of sweet basil giving this beer a balanced herbaceous flavor profile.
Barley Forge (Costa Mesa, CA)
Chocolate Banana Milk Stout – ABV 5%
This ultra-decadent chocolate milk stout is reminiscent of after school play dates spent sipping chocolate malts at your local diner – Watson’s in the Orange Circle for many Orange County natives. All you need is a scoop of vanilla ice cream to accompany turn this delicious brew into a devilish dessert.
Bootlegger’s (Fullerton, CA)
Far East – Far Out West Coast IPA w/Thai Tea – ABV 7%
True to style, this West Coast IPA is extravagantly hopped, medium bodied and pours a golden hue imparted by the thai spices. Luscious hop features of pine and citrus wet the palate; while subtle flavors of star anise, tamarind and cardamom linger on the finish.
Palomino Pale Ale w/Key Lime Zest – ABV 5.5%
Carefully fashioned by lady brewer Tina Thompson (Cask Program Operator) – this highly drinkable American style IPA starts off with a dry yet malty mouthfeel with dank freshness and bright citrus notes. Beer lovers who enjoyed these cask beers at Firkfest can now head down to fullerton and sample Thompson’s specialty cask ales beginning on weekends!
Good Beer Company (Santa Ana, CA)
Lavendula Saison w/Lavender – ABV 7%
Being and avid lover of Saisons Lavendula satisfied my thirst for farmhouse funk. Inviting aromas of spice linger on the nose while delicate tartness and earthy flavors of lavender pleasantly overwhelm the palate. An apropos beer for long springtime afternoons.
