Call me Andrea. Some years ago – never mind how long precisely – having adventures in mind, I thought I would sail around a little and see the ale-y part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the liver and regulating the circulation.
The rightful shore of San Clemente plays as portico to subtle production that is Artifex Brewing. This weekend, I’m sliding just down the coast, in search of a treasure trove of craft cans. Avenida Pico – pull off the 5 Freeway (the main north-south artery of the West coast – you can ride it Mexico-to-Canada). A quick right on Calle Amanecer, and you can find yourself pint-full and fancy-free at Artifex Brewing. Artifex – a welcome oasis, a loyal friend, and a pit stop all-in-one – is fixed a bit like the Northern Star: follow it, and never be lost. This waypoint between the southern seas of San Diego beer and the northern lands of Orange County has been up to quite a lot. And by “a lot”, I mean the latest cans to hit the can craze; watch the adventurers arrive, come for their white whale. #WhalezBro
AHAB (Another Hazy Ass Beer) – ABV 8.0%
Oh, Ahab! What shall be grand in thee, it must needs be plucked at from the skies, and dived for in the deep, and featured in the unbodied air!
The evening fog, blanketing and covering the mystery below – a haze…this beer certainly has it. With a grain bill of Pilsner, Oats, Wheat, and Caramel Malt, this ale is a storm of flavor. A generous (yet curated) hop bill plies the bitterness of the drink, and lends a counterpoint to some of the sweeter grain notes. Who’s got haze? Artifex got haze.
The Seagull Has Landed IPA (The Regal Seagull Colllaboration) – ABV 6.5%
Close to our bows, strange forms in the water darted hither and thither before us; while thick in our rear flew the inscrutable sea-ravens. And every morning, perched on our stays, rows of these birds were seen; and spite of our hootings, for a long time obstinately clung to the hemp, as though they deemed our ship some drifting, uninhabited craft; a thing appointed to desolation, and therefore fit roosting-place for their homeless selves.
Bitter. Pale. Sticky. While some may flinch at the terms, any hophead knows that, properly balanced, these are ideals to strive for in some styles. The brewers have taken up their wings and flown with this standard-bearer. A bitter, moderately strong American pale ale that uses its clean, supporting malt to showcase its hop character. I want it with cheese, or chicken wings, or a blanket on the beach during a hot summer sunset.
Unicorn Juice – American Wheat with Passion Fruit, ABV 5.0%
If ye see the white one, split your lungs for him!
Unicorns are like whales (well, really more like Narwhals – but go with me on this, it’s not a Sierra Nevada article). And, like whales, if you want to experience them, you’ll usually have to wake up early and wait around a while – just for the chance of being near one. Fortunately, Artifex has managed to find the right place, time, and setting to maintain a strong whale (unicorn) program – at least enough to juice them (how does one juice a unicorn? Actually, I don’t care how – it’s delicious, and I don’t want it ruined for me.) This American wheat goes down smooth with fruity acid, sweetness, and pleasant hoppiness. If beer travelers seek to find this elusive creature, they should venture down to South County and grab a pint!
